Well… it’s been a hell of a couple weeks, let me tell you.

So I had my surgery – which was supposed to be the easy one. It was an isthmusectomy with a large nodule on it. The good news is it was benign, thank goodness!

But if you read my last post, you know I had a hematoma right there in recovery and they had to rush me back in to fix it. I thought that was the scary part. Turns out we were just getting started.

The surgery was on Tuesday. By the end of the week, my incision area kept getting bigger. I swear it looked like I had a golf ball stuck in my neck. It was pushing on my throat and making me cough constantly, and I kept losing my voice.

So that Saturday, I went to the ER. Luckily my surgeon was on call. The ER doctor called him, and he said to put me on prednisone and come see him in his office on Monday.

The prednisone helped a little — at least I could breathe better — but the swelling didn’t really go down.

So Monday I go see my surgeon and he takes TWO big vials of blood/fluid right out of my neck with a syringe. And just like that, it was pretty much flat. Woohoo! I was so pumped… until the next day.

It filled right back up again. Ugh. And it just kept filling up. At this point I was back at work and so frustrated, because I want to work, but this thing was making me feel awful.

So I called the doctor again and he got me in on Thursday. I go in and he looks at me and says, “Well, this was supposed to be an easy surgery. Turns out you’re just special.” Lol.

He tries to drain it again with the syringe, and what comes out looks like old motor oil. So apparently I was in need of an oil change. Which means going back under so he could open it back up and clean it all out.

Ugh. He said, “Tomorrow is my day off, but I’m going to schedule you for surgery and come in anyway.” He really is such a great doctor.

So I went in Friday and got it done. This time he put liquid bandage inside to keep it from bleeding. And so far, so good! I have a little swelling right now, but I’m only 2 days post-op and it already feels SO much better.

Hopefully it keeps going like this. I can go back to work on Monday with restrictions, but honestly, I’ll take it.

Has anyone else had a crazy reaction like that after surgery? I would love to hear your stories – please drop them in the comments so I know I’m not the only “special” one. 😅
